Those of us who regularly ride motorcycles know that Letchworth State Park is one of the best rides around. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve taken the opportunity to sneak over to the park in the early evenings to take a ride and enjoy the sights and atmosphere.
Bikers already know the pleasure you get from a trip through the “Grand Canyon of the East”. It’s an easy going ride, and the speed is no higher than 40 mph, so you can take your time to navigate the winding roads that take you through the park.
Because the Portageville entrance is closed, I headed in the Castile entrance and made the trip south to see the upper and middle falls. The Genesee River is flowing well and the falls are both spectacular. You can also take a look at what is happening with the trestle project. It’s always a great stop to visit the Glen Iris Inn and have a quick refreshment and say hi to all the friends who work there.
Then I headed back up the road to the north going through great wooded sections and by some of the most breathtaking views the park has to offer. There is always that moment when I look off to the right and say “Wow” - that view never gets old. Then it’s a skilled ride down by Wolf Creek and up the other side to the more forested sections of the Park.
You can’t help noticing how green and pristine it is as you take the trip to the northern end. On a warm summer evening you can also experience the fragrance of the evergreens as you travel through the park. It’s just something that you can’t experience in a car and can only be felt as you ride through the open air. On occasion, I get to the Mt. Morris entrance and turn around and make the trip back through.
There is plenty to see, great places to stop and take it all in, and wildlife everywhere. If you’re looking to take a fun and interesting ride on your motorcycle this summer, I would encourage you to visit Letchworth State Park. You won’t be disappointed.
